Children of Landscape | Tracing Narratives – Secunderabad

Adhering to our evolving ways of life, very few tend to look beyond the posters and signage that screams for our attention. Children on contrary, turn a deaf ear to such screams, thus drawing their observation to their preferred surrounding environments. Cars they look out of, the buildings they cross, a puppy around the street corner, the parlor they buy ice-cream from and the bench they sit to relish it; all collectively become their landscape. To enable its appreciation, Kevin lynch’s experiment on imageability is adapted involving these young free minds.Children shall be asked to draw from their

Children shall be asked to draw from their memory, their favorite places in the city and the path they take to reach them. There will be no restriction on the process of mind mapping. The drawing may denote the junctions of prominence, favorite places along the path, key markers etc. The illustration can be a small drawing of the structure or any element from the place or surroundings to which they associate that a place to.

These diagrams when exhibited will help us understand and reinterpret our habituated landscape, through the experiences of a child. (It will be of added interest if the parents of some of these kids also participated in making maps from their memory). This interpretation of the landscape on day 1 of the program could be carried forward through discussions, brainstorming through the days, till we revisit them on the last day. This will enable us as architects and designers to understand the elements in our landscape that have lost it’s valued due to habituation.
