Children who have problems in general learning disability, and mental retardation (MR), is a major problem in mainstreaming the children which is because of neuro- developmental disorder characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning. It is concluded that the child is retarded when their IQ score is found to be under 70. In addition to deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors that affect everyday, general living.
Once focused almost entirely on cognition the definition now includes both a component relating to mental functioning and one relating to individuals’ functional skills in their environments. As a result of this focus on the person’s abilities in practice, a person with an unusually low IQ may not be considered to have intellectually disability. Intellectual disability is subdivided into syndromic intellectual disability. Intellectual disability affects about 2–3% of the general population. 75-90% percent of the affected people have mild, Moderate and profound intellectual disability.. About a quarter of cases are caused by a genetic disorder and only 5% of cases are inherited from a person’s parents.
Adharana School For The Special Children runs a day care center for the special children offering special education for the mentally challenged. Currently the NGO is offering special education to about 50 young children in the age group of 6-18 years. Special educators engage the children in activities to horn their self help skills and engage them in providing primary social exposure to the mentally challenged. Many students of this school belong to those families who cannot afford for their commutation to the school and the NGO has been trying to mobilize resources to arrange for a transport facility with whichchildren can attend the institute comfortably.
