Ujjaini Mahankali Devalayam Bonalu season – Malkajgiri
The Ujjaini Mahankali Devalyam in Malkajgiri near the Police Station is one of the oldest temples of the mother goddess which is the source of inspiration for many temples that have come up in the zone in various localities of Malkajgiri. According to some sources there are more than 300 temples in various divisions of Malkajgiri GHMC but even to this day during the Bonalu season this temple attracts the maximum number of devotees as people from all corners make it a point to receive the darshanm of the mother goddess which is considered to be very powerful since many decades.
In the olden days when Malkajgiri had substantial lands where agriculture was the main occupation people used to worship Ammavaru with a small place of worship with in their fields but drawing inspiration from the Secunderabad Ujjaini Mahankali Temple the local community decided to construct a temple which will have rituals to the mother goddess throughout the year just like the way it is done in Secunderabad. Interestingly the first idol of the Ammavaru was carved out of a wooden trunk of a special tree(Medi Chettu) from one of the fields in R.K. Nagar Malkajgiri special Abhishekam was done to the carved idol in the Safillguda lake before it was installed with all the rituals. After Some years with the devotes and donors frequenting the temple the temple authorities ordered a special marble stone idol from Rajasthan which is currently the main idol in the temple along with the wooden idol which is also there even to this day. Later during further developmental initiatives, a idol made out of Black stone was installed in the temple in the year 2003.
Every year fifteen days before the Bonalu a traditional gattam taking the procession of the Mother Goddess starting from the Sri. Durga Devalyam near Goutham Nagar gate and later for the next fortnight taking similar procession in various streets of the zone is a traditional practice during this festival which happens even to this day as they believe that the mother goddess reaches to every home to bless the families for their peace and prosperity. One unique feature of this festival is during this holy month all people engaged in caste based occupations are felicitated as a mark of respect for their contribution to the society.
After various cultural and ritualistic processions, the mother goddess is guided through the Patel Nagar which is considered to be the border of Malkajgiri and the festival comes to an end. Although the mother goddess is revered with various names the power and form and the miracles she can bring in each of her devotees is one and the same.
