Traditional Telangana Festival Bonalu Begins in Golconda

A grand procession taken out of Golconda Fort from the Sri Jagadamba Temple marked the beginning of the month-long annual Bonalu festivities in Hyderabad on Sunday 25th June 2017. Devotees visited the temple in large numbers including many top notch politicians to receive the blessings of the Mother Goddess who is the giver of peace and prosperity throughout the year.
The festival lasts for a month and each locality in the twin cities including some villages adjoining the GHMC celebrate the festival with great reverence during this month (Ashadamasam) future predictions by an elderly woman, Dancing on the streets by Pothurajulu, and cultural and devotional concerts and special prayers by married women and young girls for a bright future are some of the highlights of this traditional festival which is popular only in Telangana state.
