Doctor Couple rendering Commendable service to the Senior Citizens
Old age is characterized by nearing the life expectancy which means the cycle of human life is nearing its end. Although much advancement has taken place in the medical field the psycho social problems of the aged and the social attitudes of people towards the senior citizens is in a sordid state. In our society ageing has become almost a curse knowing that every one have to inevitably pass through this phase many families tend to neglect their elders. Unable to adjust in their own families during this stage many aged people have no other option but to hunch on the support and aid that is provided to them by specialized homes for the aged.
SHALOM Home for the Aged under the aegis of Mamatha and Manavatha Charitable Trust is a voluntary Organization started in the year 2004 by a Doctor couple Dr.D. Srinivas and Dr. Ludia both practicing in physiotherapy and experienced in geriatric care. Although Shalom is a paid home it has a humanitarian approach living by its name and all referrals are accessed thoroughly about their social and economic profile, family background and health status and all the needy will be provided shelter. Health care is the major strength of this NGO as the aged need a feeling of warmth and protection which is a emotional need during that phase. Dr. D. Srinivas Says That “ I and my wife are qualified practitioners and our profession demands that at times we spend hours together with senior citizens who visit our clinic with major disorders like paralysis and many other Old age related ailments developing a empathetic attitude towards those senior citizens who experience ostracism in their own families we decided to start a Home which provides shelter to all the old people thus SHALOM was established” he also added that in the last decade many activities have been initiated for the welfare of the aged under our banner and today it is a 60 bedded home extending wide range of services for the senior citizens.
According to Sri G. Balakrishna Nair a octogenarian, 82 year old inmate of this home who has been staying here for the last eight years. Immediately upon his retirement from Indian railways his entire family physically assaulted him snatched all his full and final emoluments and deserted him. In a state of helplessness he was clue less about his future This home was the last hope “ With the help of some of my friends I was brought to this NGO from then I took a decision that till my last breath I would depend on SHALOM” Concluded the veteran expressing his gratitude to the doctors who extended a healing touch to all his sufferings during his stay. Like wise there are innumerable case studies that this NGO intervened in critical times and rescued senior citizens from being ill treated by their near and dear ones.
Services Of SHALOM : Specialized homely care is extended to Terminally ill, Paralytic patients, Mentally Retarded and all other old age disorders. The NGO also runs a clinic for out- patients and also Home based rehabilitation is provided besides nursing care which is a vital requirement for the aged. SHALOM currently operating in a rented premise at a high operational cost to maintain this home would welcome assistance from voluntary donors who wish to support such a noble cause.
