Millets: The ancient grains of India. Millets were not just a part of our everyday meal, but were also an intrinsic part of our culture. Did you know that in several parts of our country millets were used as part of offerings to God and various other customs during festivals?
Today, millets are making a grand comeback as a miracle grain and are becoming popular because of various reasons that appeal to today’s generation – gluten-free, high protein, low fat, and calcium and iron rich. But the reasons for millets being called the miracle grains are beyond these health benefits. Millets can grow without any irrigation even in the driest of regions of India. They are the possible answer to food sovereignty, climate change and malnutrition in our country.
Alas, this humble grain has lost its value amongst our farming fraternity because of the government’s focus on paddy and wheat distribution for public (PDS). But, lose no more hope, because we are here to spread awareness and increase acceptance of millets amongst city folks. Aranya Agricultural Alternatives – a Hyderabad based NGO brings to you a workshop on millets.
During this workshop, you will know about the culture of millet in Telangana straight from a farmer, learn about the nutritional benefits of millets and finally, watch and learn some of the ways in which you can dish out delicious recipes using millets. What’s more? We’ll wrap up the workshop with a community meal.
Don’t miss this opportunity!!!
