How Community Efforts Are Reviving Kapra Lake

How Community Efforts Are Reviving Kapra Lake :

Kapra Lake in Hyderabad–Secunderabad is seeing positive change due to the combined efforts of volunteers from Sainikpuri, Kapra residents, and the active Kapra Lake Festivals Group. People from all age groups—children, youth, adults, and elders—are participating in awareness drives, cleanliness campaigns, and lake protection activities. The Kapra Lake Festivals Group plays an important role by connecting environmental awareness with cultural events, encouraging families to respect and protect the lake. Volunteers educate the public about the dangers of dumping garbage and releasing untreated sewage into water bodies. These community efforts strongly support Telangana Government initiatives like Swachh Telangana and Haritha Haram. The growing public involvement around Kapra Lake shows how collective responsibility can help protect natural resources.

An important eco-friendly initiative is biological fencing using native plants around the lake boundary. Plants such as bamboo, vetiver (khus grass), karanja, neem, babool, and cactus form a natural green barrier. This fencing helps prevent illegal dumping, reduces soil erosion, and restricts encroachment without harming the ecosystem. Vetiver’s deep roots hold the soil firmly, while thorny plants discourage trespassing and support birds, insects, and small animals, improving biodiversity. Along with this, establishing sewage treatment plants (STPs) near residential colonies is crucial to save lakes. Colony-level STPs treat wastewater at the source and stop untreated sewage from entering lakes. Treated water can be reused for gardening and flushing. With continued efforts from volunteers, the Kapra Lake Festivals Group, and government support, Kapra Lake can be protected sustainably for future generations.
