20 September 1914 marks the birth anniversary of Late Sri Ayyagari Sambasiva Rao, popularly known as A.S. Rao, a great scientist, teacher, and entrepreneur. Born in a small village in Andhra Pradesh, he dreamed big and studied physics and electrical engineering. He made history by leading the team that brought APSARA, India’s and Asia’s first nuclear reactor, to a critical stage on 4th August 1956 at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. Later, he founded Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), shaping India’s electronics industry. Even as a scientist, he was humble, kind, and always encouraged young minds to explore and learn. Dr. A.S. Rao Nagar in Hyderabad is named to honor Dr. Ayyagari Sambasiva Rao, was born in Mogallu, a village located in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
Dr. A.S. Rao inspires young children in many ways: he loved experimenting and solving puzzles even as a child; he never gave up when faced with challenges and kept trying until he succeeded; he believed learning could happen anywhere, not just in schools; he encouraged his team to think creatively and try new ideas without fear; and he proved that a boy from a small village could achieve big dreams through curiosity, hard work, and determination.
